MSN4 Test Shoot Inspiration

Elizabeth Hoff

These images from Elizabeth Hoff use strong back lighting to bring out the model’s silhouette and enhance the transparency of the fabric against a dark background. I think the lighting for our test shoot will make a huge difference to the fabric, we will need to experiment with the lighting to ensure the fabric doesn’t  look too dense and merely masks the model.

These images have great movement and a sense of energy. A fan would have been used to create the movement and this is definitely something we will be playing with in our test shoot. You can also get the model to jump, or move the fabric herself to create movement. This helps the fabric to look alive, to give it shape, instead of hanging from the body.

Enrique Badulescu

Again these images use back lighting to enhance the  transparency of the fabric and to pick out the detail of the silhouettes. The fabric creates energy and movement, producing new forms using the body as an anchor.

Flora by Gucci – perfume ad

Billowing fabric is enhanced in post production by mirroring the image. The fabric in this ad blends with the flowers and the movement created with the wind machine creates a magical and ethereal image.

Points to note:

  • Wavy / curly hair – these types of images with flowing, moving fabric are often accompanied by curly or wavy hair. Specifically tousled hair, not neat curls. I would assume this is to enhance the sense of movement, and the free flowing nature of the light fabrics.
  • If the fabric is masking the model in any way it is important to get the lighting right. So if you intend for the fabric to be translucent make sure there is some back lighting to enhance this.
