Group Crit with Suzie Hanna

We got the chance to talk about our video test day and the differences between the film and the GIFs.

The video footage is entirely different from the GIFs, these are some of the points that were brought up:

  • The image becomes more bodily, visceral and grotesque.
  • The reality of the footage over shadows the content. GIFs are removed from reality, and the jerky motion of them catches your eye. But the footage looks too ‘real’. The reality is disappointing and less pleasing to watch.
  • If we want our work to be featured in digital magazines the GIF is perfect for quick load times and punchy delivery

This was really helpful to get some feedback on the differences, and make our next step clearer.

Jack from Animation and Sound Design, f/t, mentioned contacting shhhhblog.tumblr.com – a growing collective in Norwich, to see if there were any collaborative possibilities there. Suzie also mentioned Dilate Clothing – which was set up by some of her previous students.

Next Step:

  • Get some screen grabs from digital magazines and put our gifs in – see how they look, research other content.
  • Find a woman who collects GIFs – liaa.hslu.ch
  • Email Suzie about further reading on collaborative practices – email 4 questions
