Context: Online Magazines and Blogs

Context has driven a large part of this unit for us. We already have a website, but we want to get involved with online fashion magazines and blogs. This has influenced what media we have used throughout the unit.
When working with online media there are always a number of limitations:

  • Image Size: websites vary widely in size, and online blogs are often 700 / 900 px wide to accommodate viewers with small screens.
  • File Size: these have to be kept small so that the viewer isn’t kept waiting whilst your work loads. In the web elective we learnt that a viewer will wait up to 5 seconds for a page to load, and then leave if it hasn’t. This is something everyone is irritated by at some point, so its important to keep file sizes small.
  • Quality: the quality of online content can suffer due to jpg compression, reducing and resizing images incorrectly and a lack of colour calibration.
  • Browser Compatibility: Will all browsers show the work the same?
  • Device Compatibility: with iPhones and iPads becoming a common way of looking at online content it is important to consider their compatibility. One major issue is the exclusion of Flash material.

During the unit we experimented with GIFs and video, both of which have pros and cons when featured as online content.
