MSN4 Group Crit 21/10/10

During the group crit we spoke about the combination of fine art and fashion photography in our collaboration. I tend to draw inspiration from fashion photography and Vaida from fine art (or at least fashion photography that draws heavily on fine art photography). Tom made an interesting point about this, is there any point in holding on to these definitions? Wolfgang Tillman moves through the genres of portraiture, abstract, landscape and still life. This conversation lead to Gary talking about Jock Sturges, a photographer who says that to him there is no destinction between fashion and fine art photography as he is only concerned with the body itself and how to represent it. This is a really interesting viewpoint and one I would like to explore.

Tom also suggested that me and Vaida write down the decisions that we each make. This could be a really useful exercise to see exactly what we each bring to the collaboration.

Shaun mentioned that previous students have worked with MAC cosmetics (from the Jarrolds store) and John Olivers hair stylists.

Questions:

  • Is this destined for the gallery or fashion magazine?
  • Is there a meaningful distinction between fine art and fashion photography?

Look at:

  • Rebbecca Horne – garments that accentuate the body.
  • Wolfgang Tillman – fashion to fine art, fine art to fashion
  • Jock Sturges – video talking about the body – no distinction between fashion and fine art
  • Mathew Barney – http://www.cremaster.net/
  • Leigh Bowery – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leigh_Bowery
